ESPN
GAME TWO
Second game on ESPN. Giants Stadium. CHILLY.
I just had a wonderful soccer moment, that made me
jump around like a kid at
Christmas.
After the game, I approached Youri Djorkaeff and complimented
him on his second side volley. Even though the shot
was saved by Fire 'keeper Zach Thornton, it was not
only the best chance of the game (well, besides the
missed pk) but was of superb quality. After I shared
my appreciation for his grace and effort, I thanked
him as well for his patience after training the day
before, taking the time to sit and speak with Rob (Stone)
and I about his experience to date being a MetroStar.
He smiled (he is very kind), and said no problem.
His voice reminds me of my good buddy Philippe Blin,
master and commander of club championships (Mercury
with Aly Wagner and Danielle Slaton, as well as the
DeAnza Magic with another Santa Clara grad, CyberRay
and Mexican team member Lisa Nanez, as well as his present
Rage club). If I knew how to write with a French accent
I would, but I will leave it up to you to use your best
imagination. I then said that I looked forward to seeing
him in two weeks time, and he immediately responded
"you should come to training." I said I would
come and watch. He turned and
said, "no, to play."
I smiled as bright as when I got my first uniform for
the Quakettes (when I was 6), and told him I would bring
my cleats!!!!!!
I walked away -- no, FLOATED -- and couldn't believe
that a player, a World Cup winner, who I watched in
France 98 graciously invited me to a kick around. :-)
I still can't believe it. I LOVE SOCCER, for the physical
and mental challenges, but mostly for the people I am
fortunate enough to meet. Who would have ever thought,
me and Youri Djorkaeff kicking it together, just enjoying
the purity of the game? Never me. That's for sure.
Thanks for checking in, and I will talk to you after
the game in LA tomorrow night. Make sure you tune in.
